April Legion News

Commander’s Corner

I want to take this opportunity to thank our American Legion members who volunteered their services at “The Wall That Heals”. It was a moving experience.

Post 66, SLO Elks 322 and the DAV joined forces to provide lunches to the volunteers on “take down” day, Sunday, 5/21. It was the hit of the meals provided; Tri-Tip sandwiches, chips, cookies, fruit and candy. Food was prepared for 100 volunteers. Thank you to our BBQ crew: Bobby Evenson, Jason Meeks, Paul Richardson, Clyde Evenson, Barbara Fisher and Carol Flores. Kudos to those who packed and delivered: Gail Crawford, Rose Hart, Robert Amaral, Randy Arseneau, Steven Sales and yours truly. Bart Topham, President Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum, and Morgan Boyd, SLO County Veteran Service Officer, for a planning such a wonderful display of the “The Wall That Heals”. Magnificent job all!

Post 66 also provided donuts almost every day for the volunteers.

The Post 66 Flag was carried by Templeton’s American Legion Post during the March of colors on opening day.

Post 66 was well represented.

Thank You

For God and Country.

A Sense of Humor

Sons of The American Legion logo

Joe Piscopo became a member of the Sons of The American Legion on May 14, 2022 in Woodstock, Illinois. Later that day performs a benefit concert for Post 491 as he remembers his father’s service during WW2. A short but worthy video.

Do more then belong, participate!

American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), Unit 66

The Auxiliary is finishing up with Girls State “young ladies” to get them ready to attend the program. Our unit sponsors five schools, San Luis Obispo High School, Mission College Preparatory School, Morro Bay High School, Atascadero High Schools, and Templeton High School. Janice Somers and myself (Laurie Richards) interviewed the young ladies from each school , narrowed down to 5 wonderful “girls”. They will attend the Girls State Program June 26th to July 1st in Sacramento. Before going to Sacramento they will attend a luncheon hosted by the district in Santa Maria. Our unit will also host a dinner October 25th at the post for the young men and young ladies who attended The Boys and Girls State Program.

May is Poppy Month, the Auxiliary will be handing out poppies at Post 66 functions that month. Donations for poppies are very much welcomed. Donations can only be used on Veterans , currently military and family of either.

The Auxiliary is in the start of the election of officers for our unit. Anyone wanting to step up see Laurie Richards or Janice Somers.
