FOR WHAT YOU ASK?
The answer,
The more members of our American Legion Family that join us when we are doing something, the stronger we become. The more camaraderie we developed. The more fun we have. The more we get to know each other. The “more better” (sic) we become.
When you join us, the more actively engaged by just attending meeting and activities, the more we get to know each other. Getting to know each other is important, it just is. This is where the friendships that bind us together as an American Legion Post begin.
When you show up at Post 66 and you don’t see a friend, it can feel cold and sort of scary. But when you walk through the door at Post 66 and see a friend – the feeling is warmer and more human. Or, if someone comes up to you, says hello, extends a hand of friendship, and talks with you, it is definitely a better experience.
So join us for everything you can, be a friend to everyone and become an ambassador for your post to your American Legion Family members and everyone who visits Post 66. We are all, Post 66 Ambasadors of Friendship!
Post 66 will be conducting a blood drive on November 11, Veterans day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is one of the important ways we serve our community. The blood donated will help keep people alive – happy children, young mothers, accident victims, the elderly – who have survived major operations because blood and blood components were made available through our blood drive.
Membership Committee
Membership in our Post, Auxiliary, Sons, and Riders are critical to the success of Post 66. We need your help to grow membership, it is a team effort.
We are in the process of building a Recruiting Team for Post 66 that will recruit members for all of our Legion Family. The Recruiting Team will receive a special “MEMBERSHIP RECRUITER” patch for their uniform cap, training in recruiting techniques, information on membership publications, and specific recruiting display assignments. The Membership Committee is a working committee, not just names on a roster!
If you would like to come play (work) on our Recruiting Team, contact Rick Pushies, Membership Chair @ rpushies@yahoo.com
A Sense of Humor
It seems we have lost the Admin access to our current Facebook page. So, we need to create a new Facebook page for Post 66 and we need help. If you know anyone who is knowledgeable obout setting up a Facebook page and willing to give Post 66 a hand, please ask them contact:

Legionnaire of the Year
The California Detachment of the SONS of The American Legion has honored Rick Pushies as Legionnaire of the Year and Alex Brandon, Asst. Detachment Adjutant as SON of the Year, for their work on the new Sons Detachment website, casons.org. This was a team effort with Rick focused designing on the new website, while Alex focused on ensuring the website met the needs of the SONS Detachment. Rick also designed the new California SONS logo and their 90th Anniversary logo.
Congratulations to Rick and Alex!
COMMANDER’S CORNER
Hello American Legion Family!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have volunteered to help us out at the American Legion: Laurie Richards, Betty Bristol, Nora O’Donnell, and Denise Topham for preparing our wonderful Monday Night Social meals. Maggie and Dave Glidden, Janice Somers, Jay, and Barbara for helping with the cleanup. Nora O’Donnell, Tom Dimitt, and Jim Miller our great bartenders. Nora O’Donnell, Barbara Fisher, and Carol Flores for White Elephant Bingo. And last but not least all our fantastic American Legion members for coming and being our supporters for all our functions. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Also, want to let everyone know about a few of our fundraising ventures as well as membership drives: September 24 “Playday at the Legion” geared towards families with games, food, and prizes. Welcoming any potential new members for the Legion, Sons, and Auxiliary. Hopefully, we can put together a golf tournament, casino night, and another Playday” in November as well as a Thank You Veterans” dinner in conjunction with other local veteran organizations.
I just feel so energized by everything in the planning stages and hoping for a successful year thanks to our American Legion Family.
God bless our Veterans and God bless America.

American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 66
All five (5) girls sponsored by Unit 66 to attend the Girls State program have reported on their week at Girls State. I am including quotes from two of the girls. All the girls feel the same way.
Sasha stated:
“I want to start my report by thanking you again for selecting me to attend such an amazing event. Over the course of my whirlwind six days at Girl’s State, not only did I learn so much more about our state’s political processes all the way down to the city level, but I made friendships and connections that I am already sure will last for years.”
Megan stated:
“I wanted to thank you and the members of our local unit who sponsored San Luis Obispo County Delegates at ALA California Girls State. This past week has been a phenomenal experience. I learned so much about active and responsible citizenship, the political and governmental system, and the true value of sisterhood. The connections and people I met at Girls State were truly a wonderful experience. Saying thank you just isn’t enough- this program has had an everlasting effect on me, and I so appreciate you and the ALA for that. :)”
This coming November The Auxiliary will be having their annual fundraiser for programs like Girls State. The Raffle and or Silent auction have always been a big success. If anyone has something new or almost new please donate to our auction. We will be looking for volunteers to help with the auction. In October there will be a dinner to honor those who attended both the Boys and Girls State.
The Auxiliary will be working on Membership to recruit new members and retain current members. At our August meeting of ALA Unit 66, we will receive training on “Who is the American Legion Auxiliary” and what programs should we all be involved with.
Remember the program for 9-11 at Firehouse #1.
Happy summer!

Sons of Th e American Legion (SAL), Squadron 66
We have two new leaders in Squadron 66.
- Squadron 66 Commander
Bobby Everson - Squadron Adjutant
David Halverstadt
We are very excited about their level of enthusiasm, willingness, and drive to make Squadron 66 succeed.
When you see them at the post, congratulate them and welcome them to our American Legion Family leadership team.
NEW ASSISTANT ADJUTANT
Ramona Hedges
In anticipation of losing our most excellent Adjutant, Rich Powell, a new Assistant Adjutant, Ramona Hedges has been appointed by Commander Hampton. Unlike the adjutant, who is elected by the post membership, the assistant adjutant is appointed by the post commander. Until an election can be held for a new post adjutant, our assistant adjutant will sit in the adjutant’s chair and ensure the adjutant’s duties are fulfilled.
We are very excited about Ramona being selected as our assistant adjutant. Until her retirement just a few months ago Ramona worked for San Luis Obispo County. The demands of her work schedule made it difficult to be active in our post although she has been a member for 10 years. Things change with the passing of time. While working for the county her duties were primarily administrative, among them was acting as board clerk to the Board of Supervisors and Planning & Building Department meeting minutes. A background that will serve her well as our post adjutant. When asked where she grew up, her answer was intriguing. Her father served in the US Army and she grew up in Europe as that is where her father was stationed. Thus, she is a self-proclaimed “Army Brat” having spent most of her early years living in France and Germany. Soon after returning to America, a time came for her to make some important life choices. Ramona made a choice to serve her county in the US Navy for 7 years.
Leadership vs Management
The differnce between leadership and managemet can sometimes be confusing because leaders in the Legion often do both, lead and manage. One way to see the difference between leaders and managers is this:
- Leaders lead people
- Manangers manage things
One important trait seen in both good leaders and good managers, is initiative.
Initiative
Those Who Show Initiative:
- Do things without being told
- Find out what they need to know
- Take advantage of things others pass by, and
- They act, instead of react!
Initiative is a good trait for all membes of our American Legion family to demonstrate. If you want to help Post 66 succeed, show some initiative.

ADJUTANT
Rich Powell has faithfully served Post 66 as Adjutant since 2016. Thank you, Rich! However we are losing Rich as he and his wife Glenda, are moving to South Carolina. Grandchildren often act like magnets to grandparents. They often compel grandparent to live nearby. So it is with Rich & Glenda. All the members of the Pst 66 American Legion Family wish them the very best. We give each of them a big THANK YOU for their years of devoted service to Post 66 and Auxiliary Unit 66.
A new leader has been selected by Commander Hampton to sit in the Post 66’s Adjutant’s chair. Ramona Hedges will be sitting in that chair as an Assistant Adjutant, which is an appointed leadership position. Once Rich has completed his move and the Adjutant position is officially vacant a new Adjutant will need to be elected. This will require nominations be made for the office of Adjutant at our regular monthly meeting on the first Wednesday of the month. In the following month’s regular meeting, the election will take place.
White Elephant Bingo
The third Monday Night Social includes White Elephant Bingo.
