Attention all present & future Bartender’s
Mandatory Training AB 1221
All bartenders and/or anyone who checks ID’s, serves alcohol, manages or trains those who are responsible for alcohol-related duties, must complete a California State Responsible Beverage Service Training (RBS) course, by July 2022.
Your training course must include the successful completion of an ABC administered RBS exam. The certification requirements for AB 1221 must be renewed every 3 years.
You will find an RBS Training course from one of the Department-approved training providers online and must pass the Department’s alcohol server certification exam with a 70% or better.
The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control offers an online Responsible Beverage Service Portal! This portal provides access to all the tools you will need to ensure compliance with the mandatory RBS training requirements for Alcohol Servers, Licensees, and Training Providers. www.rbstp@abc.ca.gov.
There is also a LEAD training course that is also available to take, but not mandatory
However, it’s highly recommended by Agent Ruben Gomez, our local ABC Agent who will be doing random & unannounced inspections to ensure we are in compliance.
Any further questions regarding this training contact me or Assistant Bar manager, Barbara B Fisher.
Respectfully,
Jim Miller

DEPARTMENT OF CALIFORNIA
WEBSITE (calegion.org)
The Department of California website is an award-winning site considered by many to be one of the best in The American Legion. The website is the responsibility of the Media & Communications Commission. The commission’s Web Team works hard to keep the site easy to navigate, up to date with current information, and full of useful resources to help the leaders of our Legion Family succeed.
The “Resource Library” listed in the main navigation bar contains many great Legion resources organized into folders. The “Post Resources” folder has a list of resources especially helpful to leaders of our posts. On the Post Resources page, there are over 25 links to resources found on the department of California website and the national website of The American Legion. Among these is a link to the new Detachment of California, Sons of The American Legion (SAL) website (https://casons.org/) developed by the department Web Team in conjunction with Detachment of California SAL leadership.

Veterans Day Celebration
2021 Veterans Day Video (3:14)
Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11, 2021, was a special day for the Legion Family of Post 66 and the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum. Together we celebrated Veterans Day with and for the San Luis Obispo community.
This short video of our Post 66 & Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum’s Veterans Day Celebration was produced by Matthew Herrera. Thank you, Matthew! Manuel Y. Herrera (1919-1920) was the very first Commander of Post 66 and Matthew’s Grand Uncle.
COMMANDER’ S CORNER
Hello Legion Family!
December is a short month for Legion activities. We have one more Social Monday on December 6. Baked potatoes with all the toppings are the meal that night, and of course; a fun social time for all our Legion Family! The fun starts at 4:30 p.m., with food served at 5:00 p.m. Due to increasing costs of supplies for our Monday Socials, meal prices will be raised to $8 beginning on January 5.
We have tried to keep the cost of our weekly social events down, but when the expenses exceed the income, we had to make the tough decision to raise the price of the meal.
Then, on Wednesday, December 8, we have the wonderful Auxiliary fundraiser and Legion Christmas Party! The Post will open at 4:30 pm with dinner served at 6:30 pm. Please bring an unwrapped toy, minimum value of $10. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there at 6 pm and every child attending will get to pick a toy from those donated. All remaining toys will be donated to the Salvation Army and we can use help to deliver them. The Post will be closed for the rest of December. It’s time to give our hard-working cooks, barbecue crews, bartenders, and other volunteers a well-deserved break!
We are looking for members to step up and join our leadership team. We have openings for 2nd Vice, Sgt-at-Arms, Assistant Chaplain, Assistant Sgt-at-Arms, and Assistant Judge Advocate. If you are interested in any of these volunteer positions, please contact me. Remember; everyone that is currently a volunteer member of the Executive Committee began as a member enjoying the social aspect of our organization and eventually answered the call to take on a leadership role. I hope you agree that it takes all of us, in some way large or small, to make this a viable and supportive organization for veterans and the community. Thank you so much for your consideration.
As always, we hold our monthly member meetings in the dining room on the first Wednesday of each month and are also making the meetings available via Zoom for those who can’t be there in person. Everyone is welcome to attend in person or virtually. If you have any questions about what we are planning or working on, we encourage you to join us. This is your post and we’d love to welcome new and familiar faces to the meetings. Just send me an email (singingal57@gmail.com) and I’m happy to share the meeting link with you. Our next meetings will be on Wednesday, December 1 , and again on Wednesday, January 5. The meetings start at 6:30 p.m.
As always, I send best wishes that everyone is staying connected and healthy.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Kwanza!!

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY (ALA), UNIT 66
The Post 66 Christmas Party is on December 8. The ALA has combined its annual raffle with the Christmas Party. With the hope next year the ALA can have our annual silent auction and raffle in November. Tickets for this year’s raffle were mailed to the AL Family members, tickets will also be for sale at the door. We have the Taste of SLO, worth over $300, jewelry by Kieth Hamelton, a smoker plus many other door prizes. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there to hand out gift cards or presents to the kids. All gift cards and gifts left on the tree will be donated Toys for Tots.
The ALA will be hosting a movie night on January 28th, 2021. Popcorn and candy bars and a good family movie. Bring your kids, grandkids, and neighborhood kids.
This is the time of the year to start the process of interviews for the next session of the Girls State program. The ALA has been hosting the Girls State Program for over 75 years. Our December raffle raises funds to support the 5 students from local high schools that we send to Girls State.

SONS OF THE AMERICAN
LEGION, SQUADRON 66
November was a busy month with activities that rallied around Veterans Day. Posting and removing flags at the local cemeteries. We had a lot of help from the Girl Scout Troop 40177 including Chance & Leila Siri, Lisa Mckinney, Jessica Estrada, Luca Petterson, Michael, Violeta, Esparza, Chiara, and Diego Reniere, Sons: David Halverstadt, Greg Somers, Alan Tremper, Larry Land, Auxiliary Members: Maggie Glidden, Janice Somers, and Legionnaire Barbara Fisher, Non-Member Renee Bresette. I don’t know if this is everyone, so forgive me if I left you out! It’s a lot of work posting and picking up around 1000 Flags and we thank you all!
Another “Thank You” goes out to Camp & Pack owner Nick Deem for giving us a good deal on our new Canvas Flag bags the Son’s purchased that eliminates the need of packing out our 3 heavy flag storage boxes. We purchased 10 of them and we received good comments about them. Camp & Pack is located on Higuera St. in SLO behind Ben Franklin’s Sandwich shop and they carry a lot of great items including military items and they even buy and sell old Military Surplus Clothing like P-coats. Vintage Military canteens etc., New rope, netting, Military Medals, knives, and of course camping gear.
Veterans day was a huge success and the Sons helped out there by buying most of the food that was used, hats off to Sons Adjutant Alan Tremper for his efforts, and many trips to the Post delivering meat and veggies and most of the Sodas. Navy veteran Barbara Fisher, was the food Goddess and coordinated most of the food and BBQ crew jobs, we put out about 275 Burgers and Dogs with chips and a soda or water. All monies collected were by donation and that was a great success thanks to the generous hungry crowd.
The museum was open and Bart Topham and his crew did a great job by rounding up a crew for guided tours and inviting vintage Military Vehicles of which several attended, all in excellent restored conditions.
Dec. will bring us to our last meeting of the year on the first Monday, Dec.6 and we will be discussing the scheduled workday on Dec.11, we will be cleaning out the Medical Storage building and getting rid of some vintage Hospital Beds and some discolored mattresses, it got overflowing with too many items, please check with the post before dropping off any more items.
Hoping everyone has a great Dec. and we will see everyone in the coming New Year. Thanks again to all those who helped us at Post 66

POST 66 – MEMBER HANDBOOK
Our Member Handbook is a valuable resource for both new and seasoned members of our Post 66 Legion Family.
Our handbook is a reference tool and a training tool for all the members of our Legion Family. We print copies of our member handbook to give to new members when they attend orientation training. The handbook is also available online as a PDF file for our family members to access as needed. It can easily be downloaded and even printed if needed. (It is only 14 pages!)
In the October 2018 edition of The American Legion, Training Newsletter has published an article I wrote about the importance of the post member handbook. For that article, a generic or sample version of our Post 66 handbook was created. The sample handbook is available on calegion.org, the department of California website. The sample version created in MS Word made it easy for other posts to adapt our handbook to their specific needs. As a result, posts all across the country are using post handbooks based on our Post 66 handbook.
