Annual Pancake Breakfast

This year Post 66 has decided to hold our annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, May 22, during Armed Forces weekend, to help pay tribute to all the uniformed branches of the United States military actively serving America around the globe. This year Armed Forces Day is on Saturday, May 21.

For many years our annual $5.00 Pancake Breakfast has been the major fundraiser for Post 66. This year, in addition to changing the date we are also conducting a Silent Auction and car show. Although the proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast are an important source of income for our post, they are no longer adequate to meet our needs. We are hoping the Silent Auction and Car Show will help improve our cash flow, as we are currently operating in the red. (We spend more per month than we bring in.)

Packets of 10 tickets will soon be mailed to all members of our Legion Family. The sale of our Pancake Breakfast tickets is an important way for you to help our post succeed.

Volunteers Needed

We also need plenty of volunteers to conduct our breakfast and a volunteer signup sheet will be at the post. The Preamble of our Constitution, which we recite before every meeting, ends in the words, “Mutual Helpfulness.” Volunteering to help with post activities, like our Pancake Breakfast, is a good way to demonstrate how helpful you can be.

Hot Topic graphicThe COVID 19 epidemic, among other things, has significantly harmed our Post 66 operations and finances. We are currently operating in the RED and need to develop new sources of income.

We would appreciate your ideas and help to improve our financial status. Our financial health is a topic that will be with us for many years.

Looking at next year’s budget and focusing on fundraising, a budget meeting will be held at the Post on Monday, March 21 at 10:00 a.m. Please attend.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY (ALA), UNIT 66

Girls State logoThe ALA is busy with the Girls State program interviews.  Janice Somers, Jacqueline Plumey, and I (Laurie Richards) have interviewed 5 schools. The ALA sponsors San Luis Obispo High, Mission College Prep, Morro Bay High, Atascadero High, and Templeton High.  The ALA will be sending 5 young ladies to California State University, Sacramento where the girls will be submerged in an amazing week of learning.  Focused on responsible citizenship, leadership, and love for God and country.

Our unit is working with local schools for Americanism-Essay-Contest and Poppy Poster/Essay contests.

Levi Gonnion, Legion 66 member who is currently deployed, has requested American flags to be sent to his battalion to fly from their Apache Helicopter. American flags waving from the helicopter were approved by the ALA.  Our unit will also be adopting his battalion, Unit TF Attack, to support them with letters, cards, flags, and whatever they need.

On February 19 a workshop was held in Santa Maria for anyone from the ALA.  Several of the Unit 66 members were able to attend.  Those who attended were recertified in Leadership Training.

Auxiliary Unit 66 sponsors the family night movies on the last Friday of the month.  All movies are geared toward young viewers.  Popcorn is available along with candy bars. Our March Movie Night will be on March 25, at 6 p.m. The movie will be “Secret Life of Pets.”

American Legion Leader Elections

Submitted by Rick Pushies, Post 66 Webmaster, Department of California Web Team. Originally published by The American Legion in the American Legion Training Newsletter on April 17, 2017.

It will soon be time to elect new leaders in our local posts. Sometimes Legionnaires question, who is eligible to hold office in your post? Traditionally, every member of a post, that is in good standing (dues paid current), is eligible to hold office in their post.

Post Election signThe annual cycle of The American Legion begins each year on July 1 and runs through the end of June the following year. The officer election cycle starts to come into view in March when nominations begin to be made for new leaders at the post. During April and May, the officer election process continues and by the end of June the annual election process is over, till the cycle begins again the following year.

The quality of the leaders we elect significantly impacts the success of our posts. Posts that have a sizeable pool of Legionnaires with a passion to serve as leaders are blessed. Good leadership candidates have a clear vision for success in our post and give us hope, that things will get better.

Looking for Leaders

What should we look for in the Legionnaires we elect to lead our post? The most obvious is a desire to serve. Legionnaires who really want to serve as leaders, usually make better leaders than those who do not.

Here are some thoughts on the kind of things we should all look for, in the Legionnaires, we select as leaders:

  • A true passion for The American Legion.
  • Have a willingness to learn more about our history and programs.
  • Have the time and energy needed to succeed.
  • Ability to develop a clear vision for post success.
  • Is an effective and frequent communicator.
  • Effective computer skills are increasingly becoming important.
  • Can get the job done and keep the Legion Family together.

The Legionnaires we elect to lead our posts are important. Seek out and elect the best Legionnaires available to lead, then work hard to support them, as we work hard to serve all our veterans.

What are post leaders responsible for? In the broad view, they are responsible for the success of our post. To find a more detailed answer to the question of what leaders do, look at these documents:

Post leaders are elected by the post membership or appointed by the newly elected Post Commander, per the post bylaws. The key post leadership roles are Commander, First Vice Commander, Second Vice Commander, Adjutant, and Finance Officer. Good post commanders work with and through other post leaders.

Gratitude Unlocks the Fullness of Life

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.

It turns what we have into enough, and more.

It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.

It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.

Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

Laughter will Help Release PTSD

Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum (CCVMM)

Hello Legion family, from the vet’s museum! I’m happy to say, once again we will be working with the Legion for a Memorial Day open house. This year’s theme is “hometown heroes”. More to come on that, but be sure and set aside time to join us for a special event in May.In the meantime, we plan to help the local history museum in their recognition of World War II commemoration week in April. We are planning to be open one evening with a special guest speaker talking about World War II, and we will have a movie night with popcorn and non-alcoholic beverages included. We are developing some more new displays, and we will be implementing a digital speaker series that you can watch on our social media platforms. There will be more new and exciting offerings this year, so be sure and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and our website. See you soon!

COMMANDER’S CORNER

Hello Legion Family!

Post 66 - Commander

I would like to express my apologies for letting the newsletter slip by in February. I neglected to write a Commander’s article and did not do the follow-up I should have with our Newsletter guru, Rick Pushies. I truly appreciate all that Rick has done for the Post with regards to the newsletter and the new website. He truly is a master and an unsung hero in the background keeping us connected. Thank you, Rick, for all you have done and continue to do. It is a big job and we are working on getting him an apprentice to ease some of his workload.

As mentioned in the December and January newsletters, the Monday social meal price has been raised to $8 due to the increasing cost of supplies.

Also mentioned in December and January, we are looking for members to step up and join our leadership team. Nominations are open for 2022/2023. There are openings for most positions, like 1st and 2nd Vice and the Executive Committee. If you enjoy what the Post has to offer and what we do to help Veterans in our community, please consider putting in a little extra time by joining the great group of members who are serving now. If you are interested in any of these volunteer positions or want to know more about the commitment level they take, please contact anyone on the Executive Committee. Remember; everyone that is currently a volunteer member of the Executive Committee began as a member who answered the call to take on a leadership role, and I hope you agree that it takes all of us, in some way large or small to make this a viable and supportive organization for veterans and the community.

Other volunteer opportunities include bartender and kitchen duties. We all enjoy the socials and barbecues, and it is thanks to the great volunteers who put in the time and energy to make them happen, but it is not realistic to expect the same people to be there all the time without a break. Having been an event coordinator and activity director for over 20 years, my favorite phrase is “Many hands make light work”. Please consider lending your hands in some capacity.

Thank you for your support, for being a member of the Post 66 Family, and as always; I send best wishes that everyone is staying connected and healthy.
