AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY (ALA),
UNIT 66

Girls State logoThe ALA is busy with the Girls State program interviews.  Janice Somers, Jacqueline Plumey, and I (Laurie Richards) have interviewed 5 schools. The ALA sponsors San Luis Obispo High, Mission College Prep, Morro Bay High, Atascadero High, and Templeton High.  The ALA will be sending 5 young ladies to California State University, Sacramento where the girls will be submerged in an amazing week of learning.  Focused on responsible citizenship, leadership, and love for God and country.

Our unit is working with local schools for Americanism-Essay-Contest and Poppy Poster/Essay contests.

Levi Gonnion, Legion 66 member who is currently deployed, has requested American flags to be sent to his battalion to fly from their Apache Helicopter. American flags waving from the helicopter were approved by the ALA.  Our unit will also be adopting his battalion, Unit TF Attack, to support them with letters, cards, flags, and whatever they need.

On February 19 a workshop was held in Santa Maria for anyone from the ALA.  Several of the Unit 66 members were able to attend.  Those who attended were recertified in Leadership Training.

Auxiliary Unit 66 sponsors the family night movies on the last Friday of the month.  All movies are geared toward young viewers.  Popcorn is available along with candy bars. Our March Movie Night will be on March 25, at 6 p.m. The movie will be “Secret Life of Pets.”

Sons of The American Legion (SONS) SQUADRON

Father & Son graphic

Our Sons Squadron 66, had a successful March meeting with enough members to have a quorum and vote on one very important item, donating some money towards the Ukrainian crisis. For most American Citizens this is the most outrageous military criminal act committed in the last 70 or so years. Bombing unarmed citizens is a cruel and unforgivable act by someone wanting back some real estate in a neighboring country.

We have donated $1000 divided between 4 different  organizations:

1. Save The Children, Ukrainian Crisis Relief Fund.

2. Global Giving, Ukrainian Crisis Relief Fund.

3. Global Empowerment Mission.

4. World Central Kitchen, Chef Jose Andes, feeding refugees at the Polish border.

Our Adjutant Alan Tremper sent out the Checks and we have received several comments supporting our giving to this deserving group. We have been blessed to be financially stable due to donations from District Council 16 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union after requests by Alan. We are both retired members of Local 403 Plumbers and Steamfitters in San Luis Obispo, CA.

It is with a sad heart that I announce that Alan Tremper and I are both planning on retiring from the Son’s and the American Legion Riders Chapter this year after 10 years of service and membership at Post 66, both charter members of the Riders Chapter. We have been without a Commander (Director is the new name) for the Riders Chapter and have not had riders meetings for several months. I have discussed this with the American Legion Officers at the monthly meetings. We are in desperate need of some riders to step forward or the Riders Chapter may dissolve due to a lack of Officers. I have discussed this with our neighbor Riders Chapter in Arroyo Grande, Post 136, and in the past, they have almost lost their riders chapter but rebounded and are doing well, I requested that maybe a couple of their members jump ship and come help us but that is asking a lot and I haven’t heard back from them.  We still look good on paper as our membership is around 25 or so members for the Riders and the Sons but we need some help immediately. For Non-military riders, you are required to first be a Son so it is critical that we keep the Sons Squadron alive too. No Sons no Riders. Both programs are solvent so money is not an issue, participation is. If anyone is willing to be an Officer in either of these groups please contact me or the Commander of Post 66 or just show up at the next meeting, our meetings are the first Monday of the Month with Riders at 5:00 p.m. and the Sons at 6 p.m. April 4 is our next meeting date.

Annual Pancake Breakfast – Update

The 2022 Annual Pancake Breakfast is shaping up to be one of the best we have had in a long time. Why? Because of all the work being done in advance, to help make it a success! Our Pancake Breakfast this year will include the Pancake Breakfast, a Car Show, a Silent Auction, and a Raffle Drawing.

This year we printed 5,000 tickets for the Pancake Breakfast and every member of our Legion Family has been mailed a packet of 10 tickets to sell. Additional tickets will be sold at displays in front of local retail stores. When all 5,000 tickets are sold, we will have $25,000 in income

The California Conservation Corps will be helping out the day of the breakfast with cooking and serving the breakfast.

To help with our Silent Auction over 700 letters have been sent to local merchants requesting donations. Early response is very encouraging!

Our car show has also required a lot of work, scheduling car clubs, completing city permits, additional insurance, county permit for Veteran Hall, and developing alternate traffic plans.

If you have not already sent in your check for your Pancake Breakfast tickets, please do and keep both the tickets with stubs attached.  When you come to the Pancake Breakfast, we will detach the stub and enter it into a raffle prize drawing. You must attend the breakfast and enter for the drawing.  The raffle drawings will be held at noon and if you are not going to be here, please write your name and phone number on the ticket stub before it is placed in the raffle barrel.

Volunteers Still Needed

Yes, we still need plenty of volunteers to conduct our breakfast. A  volunteer signup sheet is at the post. Or, contact Yvonne Hampton, Pancake Breakfast Chair @ queenie1247@aol.com.

HOT  TOPIC – POST BUDGET

It is time for our Post leaders to develop the Post 66 Budget for our 2022-2023 fiscal year, which runs concurrently with the Post Leadership term of office (July 1 to June 30). Developing a balanced budget is often one of the biggest challenges our post leadership faces. During the past few years, our financial status has suffered because of the COVID19 pandemic. Developing a balanced budget has also become even more difficult to produce. A basic review of some key elements of the budgeting process may be helpful.

Income & Expenses – Our Post 66 budget is basically an itemized summary of income and expenses expected for the coming year. Or, a best guess of the money we will need to operate.

Income Sources often seem to be too few, but traditionally for Post 66 include member dues, member dinners, bar sales, our annual Pancake Breakfast, and a variety of donations. These income sources are unrestricted income, which means we are free to use the funds as needed. Although donations can be an important source of income, they can be unrestricted or restricted funds.

Expense Items include basic business expenses such as food supplies, post insurance, post utilities, American Legion fees, bar supplies, and building maintenance. In addition we have expenses for The American Legion programs we support.

What are Restricted Funds?
As a nonprofit corporation, Post 66 also receives donations that are to be used for a specific purpose. These money reserves are restricted in their use and may only be used for the specific purpose the donor requests. As an example, a donor may donate money with a request that the money be used to support the Boys State Program. We are obligated legally and morally to use the money only to support the Boys State Program as the donor requests in this example. We cannot use this restricted money for anything else.

What Is an Endowment?
An endowment is a donation of money or property to a nonprofit organization, which uses the resulting investment income or interest for a specific purpose. Most endowments are designed to keep the principal amount intact while using the investment income for charitable efforts.

This short article will help you understand the difficulties and challenges our post leaders face as they develop our Post 66 budget for the coming year.

Commander’s Corner

Hello Legion Family!

Post 66 - CommanderThe Legion is gearing up for a busy couple of months as plans are moving forward for the Annual Pancake Breakfast & Car Show and our Annual Memorial Day Ceremony – both happening in May.

Many hands are needed to make both of these events a success as we create an opportunity to promote Veteran awareness.

Many of you have probably already received your Pancake Breakfast tickets.  The Breakfast and Car Show will be held on Sunday, May 22.   I hope you will take this opportunity to sell the ten tickets and invite your friends and family to visit the Post, check out the Car Show; a new addition to our annual event, and visit the Veteran’s Museum which will be open for the day as well.  This event is our biggest fundraiser of the year and many hands make light work, so please call to find out how you can help.

The Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Monday, May 30 and we look forward to making this another opportunity to reach out to all Veterans in the community and to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service of our country.

As mentioned previously, nominations are open for 2022/2023.  There are openings for most positions, like 1st and 2nd Vice and the Executive Committee.   There are also appointed positions – jobs for anyone aplenty!  If you enjoy what the Post has to offer and what we do to help Veterans in our community, please consider putting in a little extra time by joining the great group of members who are serving now. If you are interested in any of these volunteer positions or want to know more about the commitment level they take, please contact me or anyone on the Executive Committee.  Remember; everyone that is currently a volunteer member of the Executive Committee began as a member who answered the call to take on a leadership role, and I hope you agree that it takes all of us, in some way large or small to make this a viable and supportive organization for veterans and the community.

Thank you for your support, for being a member of the Post 66 Family, and as always; I send best wishes that everyone is staying connected and healthy.

Hey, There Bartenders!

CA Law AB-1221 graphicAs per California AB 122, the “Responsible Beverage Server” law, training is mandatory for all bartenders. You must complete the training and receive your certification number by June 30, 2022. Your certification number will be kept on file in Sacramento and is good for 3 years., at which time you will need to do a refresher course to maintain your certification.

There is no waiver for private clubs or the fact that we are volunteers. If you tend bar, serve drinks or handle alcohol for 1 day, 1 hour, or 1 minute you must complete being trained to serve beverages. If you fail to receive your certification by June 30, 2022, you will no longer be able to bartend in California.

The good news for all our Post 66 bartenders, old, new, or those who want to be bartenders, we have been invited to join in with the SLO Elks Club bartender’s training session. This training will take place on May 14, 2022, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost for the training is $35 and includes lunch.

If you are unable to attend this training session, there are several training classes that will be available for you to complete online.  Visit abc.ca.gov to view all available certified courses.

“We are in the process of putting our bartenders’ schedule together for the remainder of the year. In order to do this, we need to know who is willing to participate in the Elks or the online training session and get certified.

Let me know if you plan to attend the training at the Elks Club or take the training with an online certified course. But either way, if you want to bartend after June 30, this training is necessary. We hope to get enough bartenders to continue our current schedule.

Your help is appreciated.

    Equine Therapy

Post 66 has raised $1,000 thru gift basket sales at Monday night socials to support the Veterans Treatment Court’s Equine Therapy Program.
    Equine Therapy photo
Thanks again for your support in raising funds to sponsor our Veterans Treatment Court clients to participate in equine therapy.  I attached the itinerary of the 2-day retreat that includes the proposed cost of $550 a person.  Your goal of $1,000 will help us pay for 2 two of our VTC program members to enjoy the benefits of equine therapy.  Our clients are veterans who experience conditions like PTSD, depression, and substance use disorders.  Equine therapy will assist in their recovery in the ways listed below.

Over the course of two days with the horses, participants will be learning new ways to relate to themselves and others through relationships with the horse(s) in individual and group exercises. We will practice centering exercises, developing new somatic awareness, building curiosity and other ways of looking at the self, learning what it feels like to be present and connected, learning ways to regulate emotions and the nervous system, and how to recognize triggers and their accompanying bodily sensations beforehand so that there is a choice in response rather than falling back on old and potentially harmful reactions.

Recent studies have found that being in the presence of horses can help to decrease anxiety and depression, improve mood, lower blood pressure and heart rate, help to regulate the nervous system, and increase endorphins which relieve stress and pain just to name a few of the tangible and measurable benefits of being with horses.
Let me know if you have questions or would like me to present further on our request for support.

    Sincerely,
