Commander’s Corner
Hello Legion Family!
We’re so excited about the Annual Pancake Breakfast & Car Show and our Annual Memorial Day Ceremony – both happening this month! Many hands are needed to make both of these events a success as we create an opportunity to promote Veteran awareness.
The Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Monday, May 30 and we look forward to making this another opportunity to reach out to all Veterans in the community and to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service of our country.
Elections for Officers for 2022/2023 are happening soon. There are openings for most positions, like First and Second Vice Commander and the Executive Committee. There are also appointed positions – jobs for anyone aplenty! If you enjoy what the Post has to offer and what we do to help Veterans in our community, please consider putting in a little extra time by joining the great group of members who are serving now. If you are interested in any of these volunteer positions or want to know more about the commitment level they take, please contact myself or anyone on the Executive Committee. Remember; everyone that is currently a volunteer member of the Executive Committee began as a member who answered the call to take on a leadership role, and I hope you agree that it takes all of us, in some way large or small to make this a viable and supportive organization for veterans and the community.
Thank you for your support, for being a member of the Post 66 Family, and as always; I send best wishes that everyone is staying connected and healthy.

Pancake Breakfast, Silent Auction & Car Show
Sunday, May 22 is an important day for our Post 66 Legion Family. The funds we generate from our Pancake Breakfast, Silent Auction, and Car Show will help fund the operation and programs of Post 66 for the coming Legion year (July 1 to June 31). We expect Sunday, May 22 will be a wonderful success. You may wonder why?
The simple answer is time and energy. We, our Legion Family, are devoting a lot of time and energy needed for success to happen. Success does not just happen on its own, it takes time and energy to be transformed into hard work. This year more time & energy is going into our Sunday, May 22 event because we are having three fundraising events that day – Pancake Breakfast, Silent Auction, and Car Show. Each event requires substantial planning and organization efforts, which requires special amounts of time and energy. To help you better understand how much time and energy we are putting into each of our events, here is some additional information on each event.
Silent Auction
Our Silent Auction has received much time and energy. Over 700 letters have been mailed to local businesses requesting donations for our silent auction and a number of them have also received in-person follow-up visits. Donations are still arriving!
The results include donations from:
Car Show
Car shows are fun. But, we are finding out they take a lot of time and energy to put one on. This will help you understand all the work that goes into the process.
Since we are closing down a portion of Palm Street for our event, city permits need to be approved by the Fire Department, Parks & Recreation Department, and the Public Works – Engineering Department. A written traffic plan also needs to be approved, Proper road barriers and detour signs are needed. We also needed verification from SLO County that we have reserved the Veterans Memorial Building & parking.
All the Car Clubs in SLO County were contacted and Pancake Breakfast fliers, Car Show registration forms, and maps were distributed. Judges were selected and trophies were acquired. Two local car enthusiasts, Ed Murski and Bill Dube were a big help with many of the planning details. Thank you, gentlemen!

Hey, There Bartenders!
As per California AB 122, the “Responsible Beverage Server” law, training is mandatory for all bartenders. You must complete the training and receive your certification number by June 30, 2022. Your certification number will be kept on file in Sacramento and is good for 3 years., at which time you will need to do a refresher course to maintain your certification.
There is no waiver for private clubs or the fact that we are volunteers. If you tend bar, serve drinks or handle alcohol for 1 day, 1 hour, or 1 minute you must complete being trained to serve beverages. If you fail to receive your certification by June 30, 2022, you will no longer be able to bartend in California.
The good news for all our Post 66 bartenders, old, new, or those who want to be bartenders, we have been invited to join in with the SLO Elks Club bartender’s training session. This training will take place on May 14, 2022, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost for the training is $35 and includes lunch.
If you are unable to attend this training session, there are several training classes that will be available for you to complete online. Visit abc.ca.gov to view all available certified courses.
“We are in the process of putting our bartenders’ schedule together for the remainder of the year. In order to do this, we need to know who is willing to participate in the Elks or the online training session and get certified.
Let me know if you plan to attend the training at the Elks Club or take the training with an online certified course. But either way, if you want to bartend after June 30, this training is necessary. We hope to get enough bartenders to continue our current schedule.
Your help is appreciated.
