KSBY NEWS & Post 66 Raising U.S. Flag

In 2004 the Marine Corps League and Post 66 joined forces to present a new flag pole and American flags to KSBY News. We have continued to provide replacement flags as needed for many years.

Recently members of Post 66, including Rich Powell, Adjutant, and members of KSNY News, including Ed Chapuis, General Manager of KSBY News collaborated to replace an old flag.  Working together they took down the old weathered American flag and replaced it with a brand new Old Glory. We purchase the flags, three at a time, to have them available to replace the flag being flow when it became weather-worn and weary. As patriotic Americans, Post 66 is proud of this relationship to keep our American flag flying high

AMERICAN LEGION  AUXILIARY (ALA),Unit 66

Hello from the American Legion Auxiliary

As we start our new fiscal year we want to thank Nora O’Donnell for being the Commander of Post 66 for the past 2 years.  Thank you Nora.  As the new year starts we welcome Yvonne Hampton, the new commander.

ALA will be working on membership and retaining membership.  By the end of August, I am hoping to have some In-House training fo all positions available within the ALA  and what is the ALA.  The goal is to have everyone helping in small ways to provide the veterans and post more support.  ALA is to help veterans and families.

The Auxiliary is working on a project to make lap blankets, hats, and scarfs for veterans and elderly homes.  I want to thank Faith Ann for making blankets and Elizabeth for making hats. I have a lovely bundle of items to pass along to those who need them.

The Girls State program for our unit is sending 5 young ladies to Sacramento in 2023 for a week-long intense to learn about how the government is run.  New to the ALA Girls State is the bus system, 4 girls will use the bus the 5th her parents are taking her.

Post 66 – Member Survey

Our recent Member Survey was a success! Although the number of responses was low, the information we gained about members of our American Legion Family will help us know them better and serve them better. Each of the fory or so responses we received will help make our Post 66 American Kegion Family stonger.

At a very fundamental level, communication requires the giving and getting of information. Communication is a two way street. Often, we do a better job of giving out information than we do at getting information.

With the new survey function on our email service provider, it is much easier for us to get information (feedback) from you, our American Legion Family. When we know things, like what you want, when you want it, where you want it, why you want it, and how you want it,  the better we can serve you. Our survey questions (like our Member Survey) and our Contact Us Form gives each of our family members and opportunity to give us feedback that will help us serve you better.

So, please use the Contact Us Form and respond to our survey questions. The Member Survey is expected to remain on our website, so if you have not yet filled it out. Please do.

The contact form and our use of surveys are new. For those we feel, you cannot use these new communications tools and feel “We can’t do it this way, because we’ve never done it this way before, we say: “If you always do what you’ve always done you will always get what you’ve always gotten.”  And, we want to get something better, than what we’ve always gotten!

COMMANDER’S CORNER

Hello American Legion Family!

As the new Commander of the Post66 American Legion Family, I want to take this opportunity to thank our Jr. Past Commander, Nora O’Donnell for a job well done.  Nora held our post together for the past two years, during one of our post’s worst periods, the COVID-19 Epidemic.

Thank you, Nora – for a job well done!

Our American Legion Family has done an impressive job supporting our activities, this year so far. Including our:

  • Pancake breakfast, silent auction and car show, T-Shirt, and Tote Bag sales.  Post 66 cleared over $14,000 net (after expenses) from our May 22 Pancake Breakfast event this year.
  • We had a fantastic turnout for our June 20, Monday Night Social event was done in collaboration with the SLO County Veterans Sevices as well as statewide Veteran Service Officers.  We managed to clear over $1,100 making this the biggest financial success for our a Monday night social. So far!
  • Facility rentals are on the rise. This is an important source of income for Post 66 and we currently have over 10 rental bookings through August.

NEF ProgramGood job all and thank you for being there to support our American Legion Family!

During my year as commander, our American Legion Family will focus on;

  1. Improving our financial status.
  2. Collaboration with other veteran veterans service organizations, such as the Veteran Services of SLO County, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and fellow American Legion Posts in San Luis Obispo County. (Posts 50, 136, 220, and 432)
  3. Support for our Boyd Bristol Medical Equipment Program, which is another important way we serve our veterans and their families.
  4. Supporting the more immediate needs of local veterans and families through our Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) program, which helps families in need meet the cost of shelter, food, utilities, and health expenses

I am looking forward to working with members of our American Legion Family to reach higher levels of success in serving veterans, their families, and the greater SLO community

Thank you all.

God Bless America and Post 66.

The 2022 Boys State program was a big success!  Gary Leach, President The American Legion California Boys State Foundation and Tim Aboudara, Boys State Chief Counselor have led a very dedicated and dynamic staff to produce an outstanding Legion Program.

The 2023 Boys State will see changes mandated by the passage of California legislation. Although these mandated changes will be a challenge, we are very confident California will continue to present one of the highest quality Legion Youth Programs in The American Legion.

This video is from the national website of The American Legion and helps explain why the California Boys State program is considered on of the best.

“California American Legion Boys State citizens elect South Gate student Governor”

David Mendoza of South Gate, Calif. was elected the Governor of 2022 American Legion California Boys State. Mendoza was sworn in by John Perez, the 68th speaker of the California State Assembly, and Sons of The American Legion National Commander Michael Fox attended the inauguration.

Amateur Radio or Ham Radio

Since the 1930s the American Legion has supported the inclusion of Ham Radio programs in local posts. Ham Radio was encouraged in local posts as part of a national emergency response program In 2010 at the national convention Resolution No. 134, “The
American Legion Role in Homeland Security,”  was passed.

Are there any members of our American Legion Family that would be interested in starting a Ham Radio club in Post 66″ If you are interested tell a post leader or send an email to webmaster@post66slo.org
